Poker for Mac

Mac Online Poker

Poker for Mac computers is becoming much more readily available but still requires a little research to accomplish.  We'll take care of that for you.  The basic issue is that much of the offline and online poker software has been written for a Windows platform rather than for Apple Mac OS X.  So, you have two options, locate poker software that runs natively on the Apple Macintosh platform, or use a work-around that will allow you to run Windows software on your Macintosh computer.

We will discuss the best native Poker for Mac software as well as the two best work-around options to run poker on Mac computers - Virtual PC and Apple Boot Camp.

Mac Online Poker Software

Most people facing this issue are looking for online poker for Mac computers, so let's address this first.  Online poker is multi-player poker software that allows you to play live against other human players from around the world.  The poker software is free to download and players can join both play money poker games as well as real money poker games.

There are only a few online poker rooms offering native Mac software and the only two worth considering are the largest online poker rooms - Party Poker and Pacific Poker.  The most popular online poker room is Party Poker so that would be the one to try first.

Party Poker for Mac

Until recently, Mac users were only able to play free-money games at Party Poker.  Now Party Poker offers downloadable Mac OS X native poker software that allows Mac users to play in the real money single table games.  The Party Poker for Mac software is scheduled to be updated soon to allow Mac users to play in the real money poker tournaments.  Party Poker for Mac includes the most popular poker games such as Texas Hold’em, Omaha, and Seven Card Stud.

To download the Party Poker for Mac software, just go to Party Poker and click on the "Download Now" button.  Click "run" on the next screen.  After downloading, go to the location where you saved the installation application and double-click it (it is typically easiest to save the file to your desktop).  Once the software is installed, simply open it and create your account.  You are now ready to play Mac online poker at Party Poker.

Pacific Poker for Mac

The Pacific Poker for Mac software is a no download java based version of their poker software.  While not as robust as the download poker software, the graphics and play are enjoyable.  Mac players can play at the real money single tables as well as the online poker tournaments.  Mac online poker games include Texas Hold’em, Omaha Poker, and Seven Card Stud.

To play the Pacific Poker for Mac games, simply go to Pacific Poker and click on the "Quick Play" no download button.  This will bring up a " How did you hear about Us" screen and upon clicking "Continue" you will get a Registration screen.  Simply fill in the blanks and you are ready to play Mac online poker at Pacific Poker.

Offline Poker for Mac

If you are looking for offline poker software for Mac computers in which you play against computer opponents, there is simply little available.  The only one worth looking at is World Class PokerWorld Class Poker created by Masque Publishing.  Fortunately, Masque creates some very good software and World Class Poker is no exception.  This is a fun game to play and it will certainly improve your poker skills whether you are a beginner or an expert.  The software includes the most popular poker games - limit and no limit Texas Hold'em, Omaha, 7 Card Stud, and 5 Card Draw.

Masque created the software with poker pro T.J. Cloutier and the poker advice is really quite excellent.  Players can get tips and recommended strategy for every situation during the poker game.  Words and phrases in the poker tips that would be considered poker jargon are hyper-linked to a comprehensive poker dictionary, which fully explains the meaning.  After playing for a while, you'll notice that the tips vary depending upon your position relative to the dealer button, your chip stack, and how many players are left in the hand.  There is often advice for the kind of player you think you may be up against.  This goes beyond the usual basic strategy tips in most poker software.

When playing no limit Texas Hold'em games, you can set an option to estimate the probability that you will win the hand.  Additionally, if you click on your cards, you'll see your current hand rank and, after the flop, you'll see the probability of improvement to various other hand ranks.  If there's a bet to you, it also shows the "pot odds" and the number of "outs" if you have a drawing hand.  If you're last to act, it tells you whether pot odds justify a call.

There is also a "Replay" feature that allows you to replay any of the Texas Hold'em tournament hands, or entire Texas Hold'em tournaments.  The Replay feature shows the hands of all the players face up and not only gives you a chance to see who was bluffing (yes, the computer players will try to bluff), but also shows the true mathematical probabilities of all player hands as each card comes out.

World Class Poker for Mac is your best choice in offline poker software.

Virtual PC

Mac users can run any Windows based poker software on their Mac by installing Microsoft Virtual PC.  Virtual PC was originally created by Connectix Corporation and then purchased by Microsoft which now maintains and supports the Virtual PC software.  The main advantages of Virtual PC are that it is easy to install and operate, and it is supported by Microsoft.  The disadvantages are that Windows does operate a bit slower than on a PC, and Virtual PC does not run on the new Intel based Macs.

Virtual PC works by emulating a Pentium-based Windows machine, right on your Mac.  When you launch Virtual PC, the Windows OS appears inside a window on your Mac desktop.  You can switch back and forth between your Mac OS and Windows as easily as you go between any two windows on your Mac desktop.  Installing Virtual PC is easy, even if you’ve never worked with Windows before.  The installation CD also automatically configures Internet Explorer for Windows to work with your existing Internet connection, so you have immediate access to the Internet once your installation of Virtual PC is complete.  To make cross-platform tasks even easier, Virtual PC lets you run multiple versions of Windows at once.

The Virtual PC system requirements are as follows:

Mac OS X v 10.2.8 or later; Mac OS X v 10.3 for G5 compatibility
Mac with PowerPC G3, G4 or G5 processor only — native models, no upgrades
Minimum 700 MHz or greater
1024 x 768 display
3GB free hard disk space

Apple Boot Camp

If you have an Intel based Mac, then Apple Boot Camp is the way to go.  Once installed, Boot Camp allows Mac users to run either Windows or Mac OS X when the Mac computer is started.  On startup, you simply hold down the option key (the “alt” key) to choose between Mac OS X and Windows.  The main disadvantages of Boot Camp are that you have to restart your computer to switch back and forth between Windows and Mac OS X, and you will need to purchase the Windows XP software.

The Apple Boot Camp system requirements are as follows:

Mac OS X Tiger v10.4.6 or later
The latest Firmware updates
10GB free hard disk space
An Intel-based Mac
A blank recordable CD
A printer for the instructions
A bona fide installation disc for Microsoft Windows XP, Service Pack 2, Home or Professional (No multi-disc, upgrade or Media Center versions.)

And there you have it.  Poker for Mac computers may be more limited, but there are some very good options available to the Mac user for both online poker and offline poker games.
