World Backgammon Championship

World Championship of Backgammon

So, you are getting pretty good at backgammon and wondering if there is someplace you can test your skills against the best backgammon players in the world.  There sure is.  Welcome to the World Backgammon Championship.

World Backgammon Championship

The World Backgammon Championship takes place in July every year at the Fairmont Monte Carlo, a seaside resort in the heart of Monte Carlo. The World Championship event has various tournaments for different skill levels, beginner though advanced, so that everyone can participate and have fun.  It is as much a social event for backgammon players as it is a world championship.  The players are friendly and there are some non-backgammon events on the calendar, such as golf and tennis tournaments, so it is a great time to spend a week relaxing in Monte Carlo.

The 31st World Backgammon Championship took place July 10-16, 2006.  There were 335 players taking part in the tournaments and 212 expert backgammon players in the expert Championship tournament.  The tournament was attended by many former World Champions and backgammon legends including Paul Magriel, Falafel Nathanson, Mike Svobodny, John O'Hagan, and 2005 winner Dennis Carlston.

The two finalists in the World Championship Backgammon event were Luigi Villa of Italy (the World Backgammon Champion in 1979) and Philip Vischjager of the Netherlands.  Vischjager was in the lead throughout most of the tournament and eventually won the World Championship and a prize over €75,000, from a total prize pool over €240,000.

First Consolation winners included:1C-Fabrizio Losurdo of Italy; 2C-Pierre Svara of Monaco; and 3C/4C-Martin Foldager of Denmark / Daisuke Katagami of Japan.

Second Consolation winners included: 1C-Masayuki Mochizuki of Japan; 2C-Slava Pryadkin of Ukraine; and 3C/4C-Richard Persson of Sweden / Johan Moazed of Iran/Sweden.

World Backgammon Champions

The World Championship of Backgammon was held in Las Vegas, Nevada, from 1967 through 1974 and in the Bahamas from 1975 through 1978.  The Monte Carlo World Backgammon Championship started in 1976 but for the first few years it was not recognized as the world championship tournament by the top world backgammon players.  The Monte Carlo tournament has been recognized as the official World Backgammon Championship tournament since 1979.

Below are the World Backgammon Champions for the officially recognized world championship tournaments from 1967 to the present.  For the first three years of the Monte Carlo World Backgammon Championship that were not officially recognized, the champions were: 1976 - Joe Dwek of Great Britain, 1977 - John Noel Grinda of France, 1978 - Richard de Surmont of France in 1978.  Although these tournaments at the Monte Carlo World Championship were not officially recognized, the achievement of these individuals in winning the tournaments is worthy of recognition.
